LTTE: MaryEllen Fletcher truly listens to us

To the editor

April 16, 2025 by To the editor

To the editor:

I am writing to express my strong support for MaryEllen Fletcher’s re-election to the Swampscott Select Board. It is essential for our community to have leaders who not only represent us but also listen to our diverse viewpoints and concerns. MaryEllen strives to represent her constituents. She does the work. She is an active listener. She asks clarifying questions. She does research. She listens to residents, experts, and her fellow board members. She weighs all of the information and comes to a conclusion.

A healthy democracy thrives on thoughtful discourse and representation, which is evident when we witness varied opinions within our Select Board meetings. Differing perspectives are a sign of a vibrant, engaged community, not divisiveness. Serving on the Select Board requires a tremendous commitment of time and energy. I am secure that every board member cares deeply about the town of Swampscott and am encouraged to hear varied ideas on how we can strengthen and grow our community. I appreciate dissenting viewpoints and have been heartened that under MaryEllen’s Chair, we hear a chorus of voices rather than only one.

In our democratic process, the majority rules. We rely on voting to make choices. The Select Board must vote to make decisions. Even the decision to open and close Executive Session meetings requires a vote. Under Ms. Fletcher’s tenure as Select Board Chair, the entire Select Board voted unanimously to enter into every Executive Session meeting. If a board member did not think it appropriate to meet in Executive Session, they could have taken action in two ways: to vote not enter into Executive Session or to vote to exit Executive Session. The meeting minutes reflect all votes. The system is transparent.

MaryEllen Fletcher is not driven by ego; she is committed to serving our community. She truly listens to residents, actively engages with their concerns, and follows up thoughtfully. Her dedication to open and responsive governance makes her an invaluable asset to our town.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this important choice.

Sincerely,

Lara Goodman

Swampscott
