DANVERS — North Shore Community College (NSCC) has announced that Nicole McClain will serve as the commencement speaker for the 59th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 23.

“I am honored to be entrusted with the privilege of sharing a few words at such a pivotal moment in the journey of North Shore Community College students. As a Lynn native who has attended NSCC, I do not take this opportunity lightly. I hope to inspire these graduates and encourage them to continue to pursue their version of success,” said McClain.

In 2023, McClain made history by becoming the first Black woman elected as City Councilor-At-Large in the City of Lynn. She now serves as Chair of the Veterans Committee and is also a commissioner on the Essex County Commission on the Status of Women, where she advocates for the needs of women and girls across the region. Her passion for community uplift led her to found the North Shore Juneteenth Association, where she currently serves as President.

A proud Lynn native, McClain served 11 years in the Army National Guard, including two deployments to Iraq. While serving, she continued her education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She later completed coursework at NSCC for a paraprofessional certificate and, most recently, completed her master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy at Boston College in 2024.

“We are honored to have Councilor-At-Large McClain for our commencement ceremonies, where we celebrate the achievements of our students and celebrate our community. Councilor McClain’s story, belief in higher education, and personal empowerment are an inspiration,” stated North Shore Community College President William Heineman.

North Shore Community College (NSCC) serves 26 cities and towns along the MA North Shore with campuses in Lynn and Danvers. Founded in 1965, NSCC delivers post-secondary education to more than 7,100 credit students in more than 60 programs of study in an academic year, and an additional 2,200 noncredit students. The College also provides lifelong learning opportunities to more than 640,000 area residents through workforce development training to businesses and individuals, cultural enrichment activities, and community development resources.
