Swampscott committee aims sight on Hawthorne

April 16, 2025 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott Hawthorne Site Study Committee will be hosting its first meeting Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center to discuss possible future plans for the site.

Even though it is not meant to be a large public hearing, Committee Chair Brian Watson said that residents are still welcome to attend. Committee members have a “working session” to become more familiar with the many different potential uses for the Hawthorne site.

During the meeting, Watson will give an outline of the process in order to queue the community into discussion about different ideas for redevelopment of the site, formerly known as Hawthorne by the Sea, which closed in 2023.

At 7:15 p.m., the meeting will be moved to the gymnasium located within the high school, where attendees will catch a glimpse of the concept illustrations that have been designed so far. The drawings will be hanging in the gymnasium for all community members to see.

These are the first steps in a long journey for both the committee and the community. Watson emphasized that more meetings are in the works for the near future, which will be heavily promoted for all community members to attend. He said in those future meetings, the committee will show the community the initial concepts drawn up for tomorrow night’s meeting, as well as additional concepts that will be designed as work on the project continues.
