LYNN – David Brown has resigned as St. Mary’s High School boys basketball coach.
Brown, a 1989 graduate and member of the school’s Varsity Club athletic hall of fame, had a record of 248-65 in 13 seasons, leading the Spartans to state championships in 2016 and 2022. Prior to coming to St. Mary’s, he served as the varsity boys coach at Winthrop, compiling a record of 136-95 and winning a state title in 2011.
“I am grateful for the chance to coach at St. Mary’s the last 13 years,” Brown said. “I want to thank all my players, coaches and the community for all the support of our program. This has been a great ride and I’m proud to be going out on a high note. I knew this day would come eventually, because all great things come to an end. Thirteen years ago St. Mary’s was considered one of the best Division 4 programs in the state. I believe the program is now top 10 overall in the state and I wish the program nothing but great success going forward.”
Under Brown, St. Mary’s also won North sectional championships in 2017 and 2020 and advanced to the state final in 2017 and 2023.
“David and his teams have played an important role in the winning culture we have established at St. Mary’s,” said Athletic Director Jeff Newhall, referring to an ongoing 18-year streak in which St. Mary’s teams have won at least one state championship every year. “His teams competed at the highest level year in and year out.”
Brown scored 1,267 points at St. Mary’s and went on to eclipse the 1,000-point mark at Westfield State University, where he graduated in 1994 and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
“We are sincerely appreciative of the passion and effort David brought to our basketball program,” said Head of School Dr. John F. Dolan. “He is a proud Spartan who bleeds blue and gold. We wish him nothing but the best going forward.”
Brown, who recorded his 300th career win in 2022, led the 2024-25 team to a final record of 24-1. The 2022 Div. 3 state championship team went 27-1.
“David always held his players to a high standard,” said St. Mary’s Board of Trustees Chair William Mosakowski, for whom the annual tipoff tournament is named. “The success of his program has been a significant positive for the school over the last 13 years.”
