Marblehead's Owen Coyne races safely back to first base. (Sheldon Jacobsohn - File)

ROUNDUP: Marblehead walks off against Saugus

April 18, 2025 by Joey Barrett

It was close from the first pitch, but in the end, Marblehead’s baseball team just barely escaped Northeastern Conference foe Saugus, 2-1, at Seaside Park.

After escaping three bases-loaded jams, the Magicians scored in the fifth inning after an infield hit from Aidan Downey. However, a Tyler Riley RBI knotted the game, 1-1, for Saugus in the seventh.

Marblehead returned the favor with a lead-off walk from Colt Wales, sac bunt from Owen Coyne, and then a single from Downey to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh.

A common occurrence for the Magicians this season: pitchers’ duel. It happened again Friday between Marblehead’s Carter Sahagian (5 IP, 5 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K) and Saugus’ Brayden Crawford (6 IP, 5 H, ER, 4 BB, 6 K).

Crawford added two hits at the plate, joined in the hit column by Cam Soroko (2-for-4), Danny Zeitz, Jordan Rodriguez, Cam Bernard, and Chris Mazin.

Marblehead hosts Danvers Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Saugus welcomes Northeast Metro Tech to World Series Park Monday at noon.

SOFTBALL

Cristo Rey Boston 12
Lynn Tech 5

Despite a loss on the scoreboard, there were plenty of Lynn Tech positives in its home game against Cristo Rey. Pitcher Genevieve McCafferty recorded eight strikeouts, while catcher Genesis Baez and JB Beauchamp played well defensively, according to Coach Beth Mercaldi. Also contributing was Keila McGregor, who went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 4
Beverly 1

Marblehead served up a win against Beverly Friday evening. Samara Dosch and Abbie Goodwin won singles matches, while the duos of Lani Gilmore/Reese Friedman and Josie Reers-Callie Gilmore secured doubles victories.

“We had four of the five matches go three sets today, making this a great competitive contest,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman. “Beverly is always a solid team, and today was no exception.”
