Saugus students walk to end hunger

April 20, 2025 by Elizabeth Della Piana

SAUGUS — The Saugus National Honor Society is set to once again walk for Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus (HS2) during Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger.

HS2 is a non-profit group that helps to offset food-insecure households. It provides a weekend supply of nutritious food for weekends or school holidays during the school year, according to its social media.

This will be the fourth year that the Saugus National Honor Society participates in the walk and the third year they have raised money for HS2, according to Saugus High School’s National Honor Society advisor, Michelle Lee.

Lee explained that Project Bread originally inspired the students to get involved with HS2, and stated that working with both nonprofits has been a valuable experience for the National Honor Society.

“We attended a virtual conference for Massachusetts National Honor Society chapters a few years ago at which Project Bread was the keynote speaker. We learned about food insecurity and how non-profit organizations and volunteers were working to fight food insecurity being faced by families and children here in Massachusetts,” Lee told The Daily Item. “We’ve learned from Project Bread President and CEO that ‘one in five families with kids are worried about where their next meal will come from.’ Learning that, Project Bread inspired us to get involved, and our work with Healthy Students Healthy Saugus began.”

She added that the group has walked as a Commonwealth team, dual fundraising for Project Bread and HS2, and that 40% of the fundraising goes to Project Bread and 60% goes to HS2.

“These experiences have helped us see what a positive impact we can all have in our community when we all work together. It has made us extra grateful for what we have, what we can give, and that so many people in our community care about helping others,” Lee said.
When asked if she sees the students continuing to participate in the walk and raising money for both groups, Lee said “yes,” as the walk has become a key part of the year for students.

“Each year, the students have been enthusiastic about continuing this community service project. It is my honor to work with young people who care so much about helping others and want to partner with such great organizations like Project Bread and Healthy Students Healthy Saugus,” she said.

The Walk for Hunger will take place on May 4, but the Saugus National Honor Society has already begun fundraising for the walk online.
