Swampscott’s Bennett, Smith lead local Marathon pack

Mark Aboyoun

April 21, 2025 by Mark Aboyoun

BOSTON — On a Monday that included the 250th anniversary of Patriots’ Day, 129th Boston Marathon, and a Red Sox win, it was a big day for the City of Boston.

With nearly 150 locals in the running, there were several Marathon standouts.

Two runners from Swampscott held the fastest local times. Stephen Bennett, 36, ran in 02:39:03, while Colin Smith, 38, was right behind him in 02:39:10. Bennett clocked out as No. 717 among all runners, while Smith finished No. 728 in a pool of more than 30,000.

Lynn was well-represented, starting with Brandon Dorr-Swending, who posted a sub-3 hour marathon in 02:53:20. Scott McLean also broke the sub-3 hour mark in 02:44:36. Maria Nikolakopoulo was the lone woman representing Lynn and finished in 05:07:53.

Peabody’s Shannon O’Connell posted the fastest time among local female runners in 03:02:57. Right behind O’Connell were Marblehead’s Kristin Gendron (03:04:46) and Kylynn McKinley (03:04:18) – they were pacing at a seven-minute mile split. McKinley crossed the halfway line in 01:35:03, while Gendron made it to mile 13.1 in 01:33:01.

Christopher Chapruet topped the charts for Saugus runners as he completed the course in 02:51:37. Winthrop’s Callie and John Depina crossed the finish line together in 03:50:27. Of nine Lynnfield participants, David Picariello topped the list with a sub-4 hour time of 03:50:51.

Peabody’s Brian McCarthy walked for the Thomas E. Smith Foundation and raised more than $130,000 – placing top five for money raised as of April 18. The foundation is named after Thomas Smith, who suffered three paralyzing spinal cord injuries in a span of 17 months. Smith has recovered all three times and since, has completed his seventh Boston Marathon. McCarthy and Smith finished in 08:08:30.
