To the editor:
As a 20-year Swampscott resident, I have seen how the town administration delays vital decisions such as how to repurpose the Hawthorne restaurant property, fails to inform taxpayers of changes such as the departure of the town administrator and fails to act on urgent issues such as the sewage pollution at King’s and Fisherman Beaches.
It was therefore a breath of fresh air to watch Liz Smith at the debate for the April 29 election for the Swampscott Select Board. Rather than talk in the “insider” lingo of those who’ve been in town government for years, she explained in clear terms the issues and difficult choices we need to make in the coming year.
I was particularly impressed with her description of how she, as a citizen, worked to unlock funds to clean up Fisherman’s Beach which the city had been awarded but never received. This is the “can-do” approach we need as the town faces hefty tax hikes amid a budget shortfall and the prospect of reduced federal and state funds.
I urge Swampscott voters to watch the select board debate on the Swampscott YouTube channel and join me in voting for Liz Smith to join the select board on April 29.
Sincerely,
Bob Scheier
