Saugus’ softball team (4-4) hit the road to Waltham and returned home victorious in a 10-6 final Wednesday. Sofia McCarrier recorded the win, conceding just two earned runs and helping her own cause at the plate with a pair of hits.
“We were a bit shorthanded today, missing some starters, but the kids stepped up,” said Saugus Coach Steve Almquist.
Also contributing were Danica Schena (4 H), Lily Ventre (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 4 R), Alexa Morello (H, 2 RBI), Alannah Duong (HR, 2 RBI), and Rose Pietrzak (H, R), who rose to the occasion after being called up from the junior varsity squad.
Saugus returns home next Wednesday against Beverly with first pitch slated for 4:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Lynn English 18
Malden 6
Annika Johansson picked up her first high school win as her visiting Bulldogs pounced on Malden by a dozen runs. Across five innings, she struck out eight batters and allowed just three hits and three earned runs.
English showed off its offensive versatility, too. LeaNyah Pineiro (2 H, 2 RBI), Kate Johansson (4 H, 4 RBI), Annika Johansson (3 H, 3 RBI), and Amelia Serino (3 H, RBI) did most of the damage.
The Bulldogs’ big inning was the third with nine runs scored.
Marblehead 2
Danvers 0
For eight innings, runs were hard to come by. As a matter of fact – goose eggs.
But in the ninth inning, Marblehead’s Isabel Mortensen hit a leadoff single and went to third base on Haley Schmitt’s base hit. From there, Tessa Francis (9 IP, 4 H, 13 K) drove them home with a timely double to center field.
Beverly 13
Peabody 5
Despite a home-run highlight from Peabody’s Lizzy Bettencourt, her Tanners met their match and dropped a home game. They return home Friday morning against Danvers with first pitch set for 10 a.m.
Lynn Classical
Chelsea
Wednesday’s game between host Lynn Classical and Chelsea was postponed due to Chelsea not having enough players.
BASEBALL
Lynn Classical 20
Chelsea 2
It was no home field, no problem for Classical, which had the hot bats in a convincing win against Chelsea. Braeden Ohannesian started on the bump, while Ronal Brea slammed a three-run homer and Dami Munoz batted 2-for-2 with three RBI and a pair of runs.
St. John’s Shrewsbury 3
St. Mary’s 1
The visiting Spartans (7-1) dropped their first game of the season despite an RBI from Maxwell Parent and a six-strikeout performance from Josh Doney, who allowed just two earned runs across four innings. St. Mary’s looks to bounce back Friday when it welcomes Pope Francis to Fraser Field at 4 p.m.
Salem 4
Swampscott 0
The Witches extended their winning streak to three games with a shutout win against the Big Blue. Shea Christel connected on three hits for Salem, while Jordan O’Malley (7 IP) struck out 10 Swampscott batters, allowed four hits, and walked just one.
Peabody 4
Beverly 2
With pitcher Max Silvia (5 H, 9 K, BB, 2 ER) wheeling-and-dealing his way through seven complete innings, the Tanners doubled up host Beverly. Peabody’s offense was led by Jake Crocker (3-for-3, 2 RBI, R), Jariel Tolentino (2-for-4, 2 R), and Joey Smith (2-for-3).
Marblehead 12
Danvers 3
Marblehead (5-4, 3-2 Northeastern Conference) tallied six runs in the first two innings en route to a victory at Seaside Park. Cam Quigley and Stef Shepard compiled two hits apiece, E.J. Wyman recorded two RBI, Julius Galante secured his first hit of the season, and Ian McComish (5 IP) allowed just four hits and no earned runs.
BOYS LACROSSE
Masconomet 11
Marblehead 10
It took overtime, but Masconomet squeezed out a victory in Marblehead. Leading the Magicians were Will Sullivan (5 goals, assist), who continued his season-long tear, Reece Moore (2 goals, assist), and Tyler Forbes (goal, 2 assists). Colin Maniaci made 13 saves between the pipes.
St. John’s Prep 10
Andover 5
The Prep (9-0) kept its perfect record intact with a doubling up of host Andover. Do-it-all Eagle Austin Kitces made eight saves and scored a goal in the second quarter. Will Crawford won nine face-offs, Beckett Lee scored twice, and Luke Kelly dished out two assists alongside a goal.
