LYNN — Jason Rogato, an assistant coach for Lynn Classical’s varsity baseball team, will coach the Rams for the remainder of the season after Leon Elwell, in his second season, resigned earlier this week.
“Jay is being elevated to head coach for the remainder of the season,” said first-year Classical Athletic Director Josh Mower. “He’s always been super easy and friendly to work with. Jay’s done a good job and he brings lots of continuity – we’re happy to have him.”
Mower declined to comment on Elwell’s resignation. Elwell did not respond to messages seeking comment.
After the season, the position will be posted for anyone to apply, according to Mower. Several assistant coaches also resigned.
Classical is 6-1 with wins against Lynnfield, Everett, Medford, Lynn English, Somerville, and Chelsea.
“The continuity is the biggest thing,” Mower said. “The kids are having a good season, so we want to keep that momentum coming.”
Rogato said it’s an exciting team to take over for.
“We have a good, young team and we’ve been working really hard this year,” he said. “We have great leadership from Christian Figueroa, Rolky Brea, Mark Walsh, and Boo DiSaia.”
As for goals on the diamond, those “haven’t changed,” according to Rogato.
“Our goal is to get back into the state tournament and make a run for the GBL (Greater Boston League) title this season,” he said.
Elwell was named head coach in August of 2023. Classical made the state tournament last season with a 10-10 record.
The Rams – just four wins away from clinching another tournament berth – host Danvers Sunday with first pitch slated for 10 a.m. It’s the start of a three-game home stretch at Fraser Field.
