Four teams squared off in the Spartan Invitational baseball tournament this past weekend, but only one could survive. After defeating Pope Francis Friday, St. Mary’s (9-1) took down Masconomet, 8-0, in Sunday’s title game at Fraser Field. Despite the eight-run victory, it wasn’t easy for the Spartans, who led just 1-0 after five innings, but scored seven runs in the sixth. Tournament MVP Cam McGonagle (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K) earned the win, while Michael DeMaino (2 H, 2 R), Jaiden Driscoll (2 RBI), McGonagle (2 RBI), and Kyle Doney (2 RBI) led the offense. St. Mary’s committed just one error, compared to Masconomet’s four.
