Swampscott seeks community input for VFW project

SWAMPSCOTT — The town will be hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss the redevelopment of 10 New Ocean St./12-24 Pine St. on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Community members are welcome to head down to 89 Burrill St., the former location of ReachArts and the site planned to house the veterans, on Wednesday evening. Attendees are encouraged to voice their concerns and perspectives on the project, as the town seeks to gauge communal input on the project to make sure the voices of residents are heard.

Interim Town Administrator and Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) Gino Cresta said that by getting input from residents, the hope is to hear the neighborhood’s concerns.

“We want to hear the neighborhood’s concerns, because we’ll be moving the VFW over to Burrill Street at the former ReachArts building, and we just want to make sure that all the neighbors know exactly what we’re doing,” Cresta said.

He continued, “I know they’ll all have concerns, but I think some of the biggest concerns that the neighbors will have, as well as the VFW Post, are the lack of off-street parking. So, we want to just talk to the residents and see if we can accommodate them as best we can, and also try to work with them the best that we can.”

Select Board Chair MaryEllen Fletcher also shared her support and excitement for the upcoming meeting.

“I hope neighbors and residents of the Pine Street neighborhood join us to learn about the planned affordable housing project, which will prioritize veterans and Swampscott residents,” Fletcher said. “This development will provide vital housing for those who’ve served our country and families in need of affordable options. I’m also excited to partner with B’nai B’rith Housing on this initiative to create affordable housing.”
