Despite some versatile offense from the St. John’s Prep lacrosse team – six players scored goals Saturday – the Eagles (9-1) met their match for the first time this spring. Staples (Westport, Conn.) came onto Glatz Field and left with a 12-6 victory over the defending Division 1 champions.

Staples scored five first-quarter goals to put pressure on the hosts, who committed early turnovers and never found their offensive rhythm.

There were some positives, however. Will Crawford won 16 of 21 face-offs, while Josh Haarmann, Cam McCarthy, Madden McGowan, Ryan McCarthy, Josh Barton, and Bo Minogue scored goals.

Mattheus DuPlessis made eight saves on 20 shots for the Eagles, who return to action Tuesday when they host undefeated Boston College High at 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Peabody 14
Billerica Memorial 7

With a “total team effort,” according to Peabody Coach Michelle Roach, her Tanners doubled up Billerica in enemy territory Saturday. Ally Bettencourt’s five goals, Brooke Lomasney’s six points, and Caitlin Snow’s 15 saves were the difference.

“We played strong in all three zones, and it was clear the focus and intensity we had in practice all week paid off,” Roach said. “Our defense was exceptional, our transition game was sharp, and the girls were locked in from the first whistle to the last. I’m incredibly proud of the outstanding performance and effort from the entire team. They truly showed how hard they’ve been working.”

Madi Barrett and Ari Alvarado each tucked a pair of goals. Bella Kassis and Victoria Vaz also scored.

BASEBALL

Lynn Classical 8
Danvers 6

A five-run deficit was no problem for Classical (7-1), which stormed back and topped Danvers by a pair of runs at Fraser Field. Rams’ pitcher Yunier Moreno (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K) earned his first win, while the offense was led by Mark Walsh, Christian Figueroa, and Ronal Brea, who all batted 2-for-4.

“The boys were resilient today, falling behind early, but they battled back,” said Classical Coach Jason Rogato. “I’m proud of how they never gave up. Yunier Moreno came in to pitch in the second (inning) and gave us four great innings for his first win – he put us in a good spot to come back. Our captain, Figueroa, came in to close out the game.”

Marblehead 4
Pope Francis 3

After falling to Masconomet in Friday’s opening round of the Spartan Invitational in Lynn, Marblehead had to settle for a consolation game against Pope Francis Sunday. In the end, the Magicians took care of business by a run.

Marblehead hadn’t registered a hit until the sixth inning, but overcame a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth. Leading the Magicians were Colt Wales (2 H, 4 RBI), Greyson Leventhal (H), Aidan Downey (H), Will DePhillips (H), and Owen Coyne (W, 2 K).

With two outs, Pope Francis tied the game in the seventh inning, but Marblehead bounced back in the eighth with the game-winning run.

SOFTBALL

Saturday’s game between Monomoy and St. Mary’s at Rogato Field was postponed due to weather conditions.
