Bettencourt seeks eighth term in Peabody

PEABODY — Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt Jr. has announced his intention to seek reelection this fall, pointing to transformative public projects as key reasons for another term.

“Together we’re making great progress on some truly pivotal projects—from construction of our new public safety headquarters, to rebuilding Central Street, and laying the groundwork for our new high school,” Bettencourt said. “I’m running for another term to keep Peabody moving forward.”

Construction of the new public safety headquarters is underway next to Higgins Middle School. The facility will house the Peabody Police and Fire departments, along with Emergency Management Services.

“Having all three agencies under one roof will be invaluable, especially during city-wide emergencies,” Bettencourt said. “The building will be more accessible to residents, and we’re on track to open by the end of next year.”

The $20 million Central Street Improvement Project is also progressing, supported by state and federal funds. The overhaul includes new pavement, sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals, and design upgrades to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in a corridor used by 70,000 vehicles daily.

Peabody is also partnering with the state to build a new Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. The project is entering the feasibility phase following City Council approval and the mayor’s appointment of a building committee last fall.

“Peabody is finally getting the new high school we’ve needed for so long,” Bettencourt said. “It’s going to be a game-changer—giving our students every advantage and bringing pride to the whole region.”

Since taking office in 2011, Bettencourt has overseen major accomplishments including the opening of the new Higgins Middle School, improvements to water infrastructure and parks, flood mitigation, and stable public safety staffing—all while maintaining strong fiscal management.

“Peabody’s success comes from working together,” Bettencourt said. “We’ve accomplished a lot, and it’s just the beginning. I’m excited to keep the momentum going.”
