DANVERS — If you’re a man who loves to sing in the car, or if you’ve sung in a high school chorus, community theater, or church choir, now you can turn your love of singing into a great hobby.
“Give us three Wednesday evenings, and we’ll give you the skills you need to experience the fun of solo or group singing,” said Billy Carleton, musical director of the Northshoremen Chorus.
The course, called “Ready, Set, Sing,” is taught by Carleton, who also teaches chorus and music technology at the Holten Richmond Middle School in Danvers. He is a 2019 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, earning his bachelor’s degree in music education (voice). He earned his master’s degree in music education in 2023 from Boston University.
The next series of Ready, Set, Sing classes will take place at 7 p.m. on the Wednesday evenings of April 30, May 7, and May 14 at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 46 Cherry St., Danvers. Beginner and experienced singers are welcome, the ability to read music is not required, and all learning materials are free. Advance registration is recommended. To register or learn more, please call 866-462-7664 or email [email protected].
“We’ll teach you everything you need to know to sing richly and produce great harmony,” Carleton said. “You’ll soon be ringing beautiful a cappella chords in the company of a great bunch of fellow singers.”
The Northshoremen Chorus is a chapter of the 26,000-member Barbershop Harmony Society, and in recent years the chorus has realized much success. In 2021 it was named the Patriot Division Small Chorus Champion. In 2019 and 2023, it was named the Northeastern District Patriot Division Most Improved Chorus, and in 2024 earned its highest competition score in more than 25 years. The chorus always welcomes new members.
