Marblehead’s softball team upped its record to 9-1 with Wednesday’s 4-0 victory in Salem. Tessa Francis faced 23 batters, struck out 19, and went home with her second no-hitter of the season.
Leading the offense was Nora Mahan, who doubled in the sixth inning and was brought home by Luka Bornhorst’s double. Hailey Schmitt knocked in a pair of runs in the seventh.
As of Wednesday, Marblehead was ranked No. 14 in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings. Coach Johnny Gold and the Magicians host Saugus Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Todd Norman Memorial Game.

The Sachems (4-5) connected on nine hits, but they weren’t enough to match Beverly’s explosive offense. Leading Saugus were Alannah Duong (3 H, HR, 5 RBI), Alexa Morello (2 H), Lily Ventre (2 H), Taylor Deleidi (H), and Angelina Dow (H, 2B).
“We couldn’t get out of our own way for the first two innings,” said Saugus Coach Steve Almquist. “We gave up seven runs on four errors.”

It’s soon to be postseason time for St. Mary’s (11-1), which clinched a state tournament berth after its double-digit victory against Archbishop Williams. The opposition had no answer for Jack Zimmerman, who tossed eight innings and allowed just three hits to go with 17 strikeouts. Nate Cutone led the offense, driving in the first two runs of a 10-run eighth inning.

Classical’s Christian Figueroa (7 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 5 K) allowed just one hit and catapulted the Rams to victory at Fraser Field. Helping the cause were Mark Walsh (2-for-3), Ronal Brea (2-for-3, 2 R), and Emerson Lara (1-for-2, RBI).
“Figgy (Figueroa) is our ace and we feel comfortable every time he steps on the mound,” said Classical Coach Jason Rogato. “He was great again, only allowing one hit. The team played great defense behind him as well. We’ve played a lot of close games lately and the team has stayed in each game and battled to the end.”

The Tigers (5-7) continued to climb out of their early-season hole Wednesday. They took down the opposition by 11 runs with Christopher Boyd earning the win and Jaeran Quinones picking up the save. Leading the offense were Eddie Lewis Jr. (3-for-3), who hit a big double in the fifth inning, Richard Naugle (3-for-3, RBI), Dylan Nordyke (2 RBI), and Joanas Perez (3-for-3).
“We didn’t get the start to the season we were looking for, but this team has a ton of potential,” said Tech Coach Eddie Lewis. “These guys want to extend their season. I told them it’s not how you start – it’s how you finish. At this point, we’re just looking to take it one game at a time and finish strong.”

Swampscott’s Jamison Ford went the distance and allowed one unearned run to go with three hits, two walks, and six punchouts. He helped his own cause offensively with a single, double, two walks, and two RBI. The Big Blue received strong performances from Caden Ross (grand slam, 3 R), Nick Berube (2 H, 2 R), Nate Lee (H, 3 RBI), and Zach Alex (3 R), while Chase Groothuis and Adam Sparacio “played extremely well defensively,” according to Swampscott Coach Joe Caponigro.

Graham Gavin (11 K, 2 BB) threw a no-hitter for Beverly, which shut down the visiting Sachems Wednesday. Saugus’ Junior Rodriguez (4 H, 6 R, 3 K) tossed 3 2/3 innings, while Danny Zeitz and Connor Bloom entered in relief.

In a six-inning mercy, visiting Marblehead (6-5) had no answer against the Witches. Stefan Shepard and E.J. Wyman compiled the Magicians’ only hits.

In a “wild finish,” according to Peabody Coach Mark Bettencourt, his Tanners escaped the Vikings. Winthrop trailed by seven runs (9-2) before plating six unanswered.
Peabody’s Dylan Annese (6 1/3 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 6 K) earned the win, while Joey Sinibaldi entered for the final two outs.
Offensive damage was done by Jariel Tolentino (2-for-2, 2 RBI, R), Joey Smith (2-for-2, 2 R, 3 SB), Dylan Cunningham (2-for-3, 2 R), Noah Crocker (2-for-3, R), and Luke Maglione (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R).

Marblehead’s Lani Gilmore and Reese Friedman continued their undefeated Northeastern Conference doubles record as the visiting Magicians escaped Danvers. Sami Dosch and Abbie Goodwin won their singles matches.
“Danvers is always a competitive, but very friendly match and today was no exception,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman. “Their second doubles team really came on strong to win that match in three sets. We were happy to walk away with three points, knowing what a strong team they have this year.”
