LYNN — Fraser Field was the place to be over the weekend, with the junior varsity baseball teams of Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Lynn Tech, and St. Mary’s squaring off in the third annual Dick Maag JV Memorial Tournament.
Maag coached baseball with Classical for more than 20 years and was part of Lynn’s school system for 38 years. Rams’ Coach Pat Whalen, also a varsity assistant, created the tournament in 2023 after hearing of Maag’s passing.
“We had a great showing this weekend and a lot of people came down to watch,” Whalen said.
St. Mary’s captured its third consecutive title with Saturday’s 15-4 win against English. Hagan Parent, Alphonse Wilhelmsen, Brennan Malloy, and Kalen Huddle combined for eight hits and four RBI, while Cam Charest caught eyes with an inside-the-park home run. Parent put on a show from the bump, tossing five innings that included nine strikeouts.
As for the consolation game, Classical handled Tech in a 12-0 final. Jake Desmond of the Rams threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 of 15 batters faced.
In St. Mary’s first-round matchup against Classical – a 10-5 win Friday – Lucas Downey (5 K) earned the victory. Huddle did offensive damage with two hits and three RBI.
“The St. Mary’s vs. Lynn Classical game had a lot of excitement to it,” Whalen said. “The umpire came up to me after the game and said that out of all the games he’s umpired on the JV level, that was the most varsity-like atmosphere.”
Huddle was the weekend’s Most Valuable Player. The all-tournament team consisted of Tech’s Yandel Nin, English’s Joshua Prandy, Desmond, and Parent.
“I also want to give a few shoutouts: the three JV coaches at Lynn Tech, Lynn English, and St. Mary’s,” Whalen said. “Also, Lynn Classical Athletic Director Josh Mower for helping me set this up. We are looking forward to year four next year.”
