PEABODY — Alumni and Friends of Lynn Classical High School held a bowling fundraiser at Metro Bowl with proceeds supporting high school seniors.
For the first time, it included the Joe Cawlina Memorial Trophy, named after the legendary Lynn bowler nicknamed “Mr. Grand Slam,” who died at age 93 this past February.
Cawlina – with his near-flawless delivery – won multiple world titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions. He was inducted into the Candlepin Bowling Hall of Fame in 1981 and Lynn Classical (Class of 48) Hall of Fame in 2019.
The first annual Joe Cawlina Memorial Trophy was won by Alumni and Friends Vice President Dennis Baldini with an average score of 92.
The event was well-attended, including by Cawlina’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, all of whom donned classic bowling jerseys with Cawlina’s name on the back.
All five of Cawlina’s children – Scott, Rick, Michael, Nancy, and Barbara – attended LCHS. The Cawlina family donated $1,000 – coincidentally the same amount Cawlina earned for winning the World Championship back in 1961.
Also attending were Alumni and Friends President Gene Constantino, Vice President Stanley Slepoy, Treasurer Susan Hogan, and dozens of supporters.
