SAUGUS — Northeast Coonhound Rescue’s spring trail walk will be coming to Breakheart on Sunday.
“This is a great opportunity to learn more about beagles and coonhounds, or to join the group walk with your own hound,” the rescue wrote in a press release.
The rescue is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit that supports coonhound and beagle welfare in New England and transports homeless hounds from southern shelters to find forever homes in the northeast.
“We promote the coonhound breeds in the northeast and provide educational information to potential adopters,” the website states. “We are a foster-based rescue. Our dogs are in foster homes throughout the area or in some cases in the south waiting to be transported north. We do not have a physical shelter.”
The group has been rescuing hounds since 2010, and according to its website, it has rescued almost 1,500 coonhounds and beagles.
The rescue has highlighted the fact that coonhounds and beagles are often abandoned as they are not viewed as pets, kept in outdoor pens with no names and seen as “hunting equipment” with numbers and symbols painted and tattooed on their bodies.
“Our mission is to educate people about the suitability of coonhounds as pets and to support hound adoption in the northeastern states,” the rescue wrote.
The group will be meeting at the visitors center at 10 a.m., and it asks that all hounds be on leashes.
