SAUGUS — The town will be remembering Cpl. Scott Procopio Saturday with the annual Gold Star Run for Honor, located at Town Hall, 298 Central St.

Procopio was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006, as a member of the Third Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment. According to the run’s website, “Scott was on his second deployment as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, having previously served in Fallujah in 2005. He was killed in action as a result of a roadside bomb on the morning of April 2, 2006.”

His life continues to be honored as the Gold Star Run for Honor enters its 12th year. The run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. and includes a 5K, 10K, 1 Mile Walk and Kids Fun Run.

All proceeds from the run are allocated to the Cpl. Scott J. Procopio Memorial Scholarship program which provides high school seniors with academic scholarships. “Each of the last five years, this event has continued to raise more than $25K/year to be allocated to High School seniors furthering their education,” the website states.

The race was started by The Procopio Companies, a Lynnfield-based real estate development and construction management firm in which Michael Procopio, Scott’s brother, is the chief executive officer.

Community sponsors and vendors will be setup in front of Town Hall and Essex Landing will be providing hot dogs for participants. There will be other food and drink available as well. Following the run will be the Saugus Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.

Those looking to join the run/walk can do so online or in person. Signing up during race week (through May 23) is $35 for adults plus $5 for the 10K. It will be $15 for kids 15 and under who sign up during this week. If you sign up on race day it’s $45 for adults and $20 for kids 15 and under. For the 1 Mile Walk it is $25 through race week and $35 on race day. For the Kids Fun Run, for kids under 10, it is $15 through race week and $20 day of.
