SWAMPSCOTT — In the town’s latest efforts against substance abuse and recovery, the Health Department will be offering a free “Recovery Coach Academy” for residents.
The Recovery Coach Academy will be held at the Swampscott Public Library, 71 Burrill St., and run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the following Mondays: June 2, 9, 16 and 30. Any community member interested in participating must be at least 18 and older.
A recovery coach helps serve as a personal guide and mentor for people who may be seeking recovery or are already receiving treatment for addiction to alcohol or other substances. This training series for the public was made possible by the Swampscott Health Department as well as the Opioid Settlement Funds.
Opioid Settlement Funds Program Contractor Michelle Simons, who has been working to educate the public on substance abuse and reduce the stigma or areas of misunderstanding, will be running the training series.
Anyone interested in learning about becoming a recovery coach, residents can visit the town library’s website or the town website to learn more. Participation in the training series is limited, and residents will be required to sign up for the entire series.
Simons has a Master’s in counseling, as well as a background in substance abuse disorder prevention and treatment initiatives. In her duties with the Health Department, her role helps Simons give recovery, prevention and community support to residents.
Any resident who may have questions about the event is encouraged to reach out to Simons at 781-596-8864 x1282 or by email at [email protected].
