Mark Aboyoun and Anne Marie Tobin

May 18, 2025 by Mark Aboyoun, Anne Marie Tobin

The Swampscott girls tennis team (13-2) pulled out a narrow 3-2 win over Danvers in a competitive Northeastern Conference matchup at home on Sunday.

The Big Blue earned two of their three points in singles play. At first singles, Nikki Carr battled through a three-set match to come out on top, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. In the third singles slot, Lilly Carr turned in a steady performance to win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Swampscott’s third point came via forfeit at first doubles. The match was tied 6-3, 3-3 when Danvers was unable to continue, giving the Big Blue the decisive edge.

Danvers pushed back with hard-fought wins in the second singles and second doubles matches, both going the distance in three sets. But Swampscott’s early points held up to secure the victory.

With the win, Swampscott improved its standing in the conference as the regular season enters its final stretch.

After defeating Danvers on Sunday, the Big Blue took on Beverly later that day. The winners for Swampscott came from the single players.

Nikki Carr won at first singles 6-1, 6-1. Ana Eccles won a close matchup at second singles 6-4, 6-4. Lilly Carr picked up the final victory winning at third singles 6-1, 6-4.

Lynnfield 2

Talk about a busy week. The Lynnfield girls tennis team (14-2) wrapped up a dizzying stretch of six matches in six days by completing a previously suspended contest Saturday morning on the road. Despite the final result not going their way, the Pioneers secured a major milestone earlier in the week — clinching a postseason berth for the 42nd consecutive season.

Saturday’s deciding point came down to second doubles. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, they were forced to forfeit the match due to a missing player, sealing the win for the host Clippers.

Lynnfield still picked up a pair of victories. Paige Martino came through in a gritty three-set win at first singles, 6-4, 3-6, (10-4), while the duo of Ella Hayman and Vicky McCrann prevailed at first doubles, 7-6, 6-1.

The loss evens the season series at 1-1. Lynnfield swept the Clippers 5-0 in the teams’ first meeting, a testament to how evenly matched these Cape Ann League rivals are.

“Both our teams are so evenly matched, we could play this contest a third time and still have a totally different team score,” Coach Craig Stone said. “All matches could not have been closer. I am so impressed with our team’s level of play, their sportsmanship, and their ability to move on and accept the next challenge.”

BOYS TENNIS

St. Mary’s 3

Danvers 2

St. Mary’s (8-6) clinched a postseason berth with a big win over the Falcons.

Thomas Shea (6-1, 6-2) and Stephen Nason (6-2, 6-0) won at singles, while the doubles team of Simon Tenorio and Thomas Weber cruised 6-2, 6-2.

BASEBALL

Pentucket 7

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Pioneers (14-3) overcame a 7-2 deficit with an eight-run sixth inning to pull off a 10-7 win.

Dylan Nguyen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and was the spark, leading off the sixth with a single and later blasting a two-run double to break a 7-7 tie. He came around to score on the same play after a Panthers error.

Nick Groussis pitched a scoreless seventh in relief to earn the save.

Tyler Adamo (2-for-3, double), Groussis (2-for-2), Madux Iovinelli (2-for-4, two doubles), and Drew George (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games for Lynnfield.

The Pioneers are scheduled to host Essex Tech on Monday at 4 p.m.

Beverly 5

Peabody 0

The Tanners were shutout at home on Saturday at noon. Jayden Cunningham and Ty Lomasney recorded the only two hits for Peabody.

St. Mary’s 12

Holliston 1

St. Mary’s rolled past Holliston at home Saturday, powered by three-hit games from Kyle Doney, Michael DeMaino, and Jaiden Driscoll.

Jack Zimmerman earned the win on the mound and helped his cause with a two-run double at the plate.

Arlington Catholic 2

St. Mary’s 1

The Spartans offense struggled against a talented Arlington Catholic team on Sunday afternoon. Michael DeMaino went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Josh Doney was on the mound for St. Mary’s. The senior allowed one earned run and struck out six in seven innings of work.

SOFTBALL

Lowell Catholic 1

Lynnfield 0

The Pioneers (9-8) couldn’t generate the offense they needed in a close loss.

Gia Gagnon pitched well, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Morgan Hubbard, Kaila George, and Julia Corrente had Lynnfield’s only hits.

Cardinal Spellman 1

St. Mary’s 0

Despite a strong effort from Aliza Crean-Oviedo, who went the distance and didn’t allow an earned run, the Spartans saw their seven-game win streak snapped. Crean-Oviedo struck out three.

Danvers 9

Saugus 3

Danvers used a five-run second inning to pull away from Saugus (8-8) on Saturday.

Maria Silva had a single and two RBIs, while freshman Angie Dow added a double.

Julia Strout made several strong defensive plays at second base, according to coach Steve Almquist.

Peabody 5

Bishop Fenwick 0

The Tanners secured a shutout win on the road Saturday, beating rival Bishop Fenwick behind strong pitching and defense.

Lynn Classical 16

Melrose 9

The Rams (10-6) racked up the hits in a high-scoring win Sunday.

Brooke Braswell went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Emma Chevalier also homered, launching a three-run shot.

Nevaeh Eth went 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs, while Aysia Olaes added a 2-for-4 day with a triple and four RBIs.

Chevalier got the win in relief, tossing five innings and allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts.
