To the editor:
Regarding the article in Tuesday’s Item, “Lynn says: End Hate,” Jori Reiken commented, “If those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
According to the modern oracle of the internet, the original source of this adage may be Spanish philosopher George Santayana, who stated in The Life of Reason (1905): “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
There are others, including Mark Twain, who made similar comments on the subject.
Apparently, some people do have a short attention span. I, for one, had the experience of being locked in a replica of a cattle car when it was in Swampscott. During the videos, some people could not tolerate watching and left the car. Others just cried.
Why are we still talking about this horrific time in history? Just look around the nation and the world. Need I say more?
