LYNN — With Memorial Day right around the corner, the city has begun to honor and mourn those who died while serving their country, starting Wednesday night with volunteers decorating the graves at Pine Grove Cemetery.

The day is usually held on Thursday, but due to weather concerns, it was moved to Wednesday.

From Saturday to Monday, people can appreciate the work done by the volunteers by visiting the flags at the sunken garden.

Director of Veterans Services Mike Sweeney commented on the upcoming events that help memorialize those who were lost.

“It’s just a real tangible way for us to let people know that we remember the fallen and that they’re sacrifice and service will never be forgotten. It goes on around the whole country in cities and towns, big and small,” Sweeney said.

He continued, saying that it’s a day when everyone can come together.

“Memorial Day is a day specifically to remember the fallen. We also pause to remember not only those who served, but those who are serving in harm’s way right now,” he said.

Also in the schedule is the 26th Annual Memorial Tree Service, which will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Lynn City Common, hosted by the Wyoma Lions Club.

Presentation of the colors will be done by the JROTC, the Lynn band will be performing, and their will be a solemn reading of each name.

“Since 1999, this cherished tradition has offered neighbors and friends a meaningful way to honor the memory of family members, friends, and veterans by sponsoring white crystal lights on the Memorial Tree. Each $10 light represents a loved one whose name will be publicly read during the service,” according to the club.

The conclusion of events honoring the fallen will be on Monday, Memorial Day, where the city will gather for a procession and ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Manning Field Parking Lot. The step off will be at 1:30 and the ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery.
