Nahant board passes union deals

Zach Laird

May 23, 2025 by Zach Laird

NAHANT — The Select Board voted in favor of extending the Collective Bargaining Extension Agreements for several unions in town during the board’s latest meeting on Wednesday evening.

Chair of the Board Rob Tibbo read the motion out loud during the meeting. “I move the Select Board to approve the Collective Bargaining Extension Agreements for the Nahant Fire Union IAFF Local 2718, Police Union Local 194, and the Public Works and Administrative Employees Union Local 2610, effective July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027,” Tibbo said.

Vice Chair Eugene Canty seconded the motion before Tibbo opened up discussion on the matter.

Town Administrator Tony Barletta then spoke, thanking the board for their support as well as the unions for working to make an easier transition for the next town administrator, after Barletta steps away from the role in July.

“Thank you for supporting this vote, and thank you to the unions for working with the town on this. The current three-year Collective Bargaining Agreement goes into its final year starting July 1,” Barletta said. “Given the transition of town administrator, the fact that we’re likely to have a Special Town Meeting in the fall… It’s one more thing that will be challenging for the next town administrator to take on in such a short time to negotiate a three-year contract.”

Barletta continued, “So, I approached the unions, and asked them if they would consider a one-year extension to make it a little bit of a smoother transition, to allow the proper amount of time and attention needed from the next town administrator.”

He said the unions were willing to move forward with the one-year extension. “So, I just want to thank them, and thank you for the support. This will help ensure a smooth transition this summer into fiscal year,” Barletta said.

“That’s fantastic, I’m really glad that they were all on board, and give us that additional window as we go through the transition,” Tibbo said. “And on behalf of the Select Board, we are very grateful for their help in this.”
