LYNN — Players and coaches from the Lynn Classical baseball program recently spent a day with members of the Alice O’Neil Challenger League, a baseball league for players who are physically, mentally, or emotionally handicapped.
“When I asked the team if they would be interested in volunteering, so many of them immediately said, ‘Yes,’” said first-year Classical Head Coach Jason Rogato, whose nephew, Camron Lawrence, has been playing in the league for nearly 10 years and is a diehard Classical fan. “They were so happy to give back and help out.”
Eighteen players and five coaches – from both the varsity and junior varsity Classical teams – were involved. They split up between two Challenger League age groups.
“It was such an excellent day,” Rogato said. “It was great to get to know some of the players and see their passion for the game of baseball. Christian Figueroa, our ace, was out there pitching. One of their players who calls himself ‘Big Papi’ hit one over the fence and it was one of the best moments. Our players enjoyed the day so much and we really got to see how much this league means to those players.”
