Gov. Maura Healey has appointed Maria Vega, of Lynn, to serve a five-year term as chair of North Shore Community College’s (NSCC) Board of Trustees. She replaces long-time board chair Dr. J.D. LaRock.
Vega was first appointed by then-Gov. Charlie Baker as a trustee in 2018 and has served as vice chair for the past four years. She also chairs the board’s policy committee and has played a leadership role in overseeing the policy implications of the NSCC Police Department’s application for accreditation, as well as the creation of a board self-evaluation tool to ensure continuous improvement.
Vega is a practice transformation improvement specialist for the Lynn Community Health Center and also owns and operates as a notary public and document translator. She earned dual associate degrees in accounting and business management from NSCC and a bachelor’s degree in health studies from Champlain College. She will soon earn a master’s in public administration degree from American Public University.
Active in the Lynn community, she has served as a board member of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, is a certified risk coder with the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC), and has been a past officer for the AAPC Watertown Chapter.
“My particular focus as board chair is to continue to support key aspects of NSCC while keeping the collective voice of the board at the forefront,” said Vega. “I am privileged to witness how important this role is and what the community impact becomes when one actively participates as board chair.”
“We now enter a new era of board leadership, and I am both excited and confident that working with Chair Vega will mean good things for NSCC,” said NSCC President William Heineman. “She certainly takes the helm at a time of significant change and turbulence in higher education. I think her curiosity and calm will serve her well in that environment. Furthermore, I know the rest of the board will be working hard with her to continue its effective governance of the college.”
Vega is a first-generation college graduate and is the mother of four adult children. She has one grandchild.
