NAHANT — Johnson Elementary School is one step closer to operating its state-of-the-art greenhouse, which will enable students to create a farmer’s market and learn practical experience about growing and selling crops.

The journey to get the school’s new greenhouse up and running has been a long one. The crux of the journey began with an anonymous donation of $80,000, which was gifted to the school in order to mitigate the bulk of expenses related to the project. The remainder of the funds was to be covered through the school’s “Buy a Brick” fundraiser, which would see a brick walkway laid out before the greenhouse with all the names of those who donated engraved.

Now, the foundation for the greenhouse has been laid out outside the school beside the field, with the help of McGrath Enterprises from Lynn. The next step will be to finally begin raising the physical structure of the actual greenhouse.

Superintendent of Schools Rob Liebow shared his excitement as the project grows closer toward completion.

“I’m excited, it’s been a long time. We’ve raised the money for this, with the help of an extremely generous donor, and we’ve also sold 140 bricks,” Liebow said. “The bricks are for the walkway, which will go right in front.”

Liebow continued, “Now, the foundation’s going in this week and hopefully the actual construction of the greenhouse will take place next week. This will be operational in the fall… And the generosity from a number of people in Nahant, along with the $80,000 anonymous donation, goes a long way.”
