LYNN — The Rotary Club of Lynn recognized eight eighth grade students from Lynn middle schools on May 29 for overcoming adversity during the school year and showing empathy to others in impactful ways.
The students honored are: Nicholas Andrade, Pickering; Janelle Ferrari, KIPP; Janae Johnson, St Mary’s; Nathan Kong, (not in group picture), Breed; Erin Needham, North Shore Christian School; Isaac Phat, Thurgood Marshall; Carlos Ortiz Puig, St. Pius V; Irina Hildago Ramirez, Lynn Tech.
The Eighth Grade Recognition Program was the brainchild of Rotarian and Lynn businessman Joe Coombs, who felt that the eighth grade was a turning point in his life. This recognition marks the 3rd such meeting this school year, with a total of 22 students being recognized this year. Since the beginning of this program in 2008, well over 500 students have received recognition, according to the press release.
The students are nominated by their teacher or guidance counselor, someone who knows the student very well. They’re then invited to a luncheon meeting of the members, where they’re individually presented with a gift certificate to a local bookstore and a Certificate of Achievement. RiverWorks Credit Union is the program’s financial sponsor.
During the individual presentations a narrative was read by various Rotarians: Kim Lee a retired Biochemist; Bill Reilly, retired financial services analyst; Irene Cowdell, retired Lynn Teacher, Cindy McCarthy, retired St. Pius V teacher; Fire Chief, Dan Sullivan, Paul Price, a local CPA, and his daughter, Claire Price Lynn Tech teacher.
“One of the most important takeaways for these and all the students recognized since 2008 is that someone noticed them in a positive way,” Past Club President Bill Reilly said.
Superintendent Dr. Evonne Alvarez also made an appearance at the recognition ceremony to show her support for the students, who have had a long relationship with the Rotary Club, the press release added.
