ROUNDUP: St. Mary’s baseball, softball teams double up in tournaments

St. Mary’s baseball (20-3) and softball (14-7) teams took care of business in their respective Division 3 state tournament games Sunday. Both advanced to the round of 16.

The top-ranked baseball Spartans defeated No. 33 Martha’s Vineyard, 3-2, in a Fraser Field matinee. Jack Zimmerman (3 H, 2 ER, 13 K) delivered a complete-game showing, while the offense was led by Michael DeMaino (3-for-4, R).

Next up is No. 16 Apponequet Regional Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The softball squad, ranked 11th, defended home field with 13 hits against No. 22 Dedham in a 10-6 final.

Catherine Newbury (2 2/3 IP, H, 4 K) earned a relief win, while Olivia DiSessa (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI) and Ryleigh Williams (2-for-2, 2 R, RBI) did offensive damage.

St. Mary’s takes on the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 6 Foxborough and No. 27 Hudson.

BASEBALL

Mansfield 7
Marblehead 3

The No. 37 Magicians (10-11) trailed, 2-1, after two innings, but fifth-seeded Mansfield took over with a three-run third inning to put the pressure on. Left-fielder Cameron Quigley and right-fielder Owen Coyne each had a pair of hits for Marblehead, while all three RBI came from Coyne. Marblehead finished with six hits, compared to Mansfield’s nine, while both teams committed two errors in the Division 2 matchup.

St. John’s Prep 6
Newton South 0

Braeden Hurley (8 K) earned the win and the No. 10 Eagles flew past No. 23 Newton South in the Division 1 tournament. The offensive load was led by Will Shaheen (2 H, RBI, R) and Connor Durney (2 H, RBI). Next up for The Prep is No. 3 Wachusett (TBD).

SOFTBALL

Bishop Fenwick 22
Hanover 14

Bats were red hot and No. 24 Fenwick jumped all over Hanover in Division 3 action. Next up for the Crusaders is a Sweet 16 matchup against No. 8 Gloucester Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Bishop Feehan 5
Peabody 4

No. 28 Peabody met its match in Attleborough, falling to No. 5 Bishop Feehan by a run in the Division 1 tournament. With the game tied, 4-4, in the seventh inning, Feehan’s Bella Silva hit a walk-off single to drive in Mylee Ramer.

BOYS LACROSSE

Winthrop 10
Tyngsborough 5

The No. 16 Vikings doubled up No. 17 Tyngsborough for a Division 4 win. Goalie Nick Romano made several key stops to keep Winthrop ahead on home turf.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 18
Hull 5

It was a successful Sunday evening at Blocksidge Field, as the No. 11 Big Blue defeated No. 22 Hull and upped their record to 14-4. A dynamic Swampscott offense was led by Avery Laundry (5 goals), Chloe Puzzo (4 goals), Cecelia Tripp (3 goals, assist), Bridget Maloney (goal, 4 assists), Victoria Pierro (3 goals, 3 assists), and Quinn Kelleher (goal, 2 assists).

BOYS TENNIS

Bedford 5
St. Mary’s 0

Top-ranked Bedford took care of business at Woburn Racquet Club Saturday and sent St. Mary’s home. The Spartans checked out with a 12-6 record. Bedford hosts Old Rochester in the Division 3 Sweet 16 Monday at 4 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Swampscott girls finished 14th (20.5) and boys 18th (17.5) in the Division 5 championships held at Westfield State University. Freshman Annabelle Averett took first place in the mile with a tremendous personal-best time of 5:07.36. She also placed second in the 2-mile (11:29.93). On the boys’ side, the 4×800 relay team of Miles Brown, Simon Brown, Hunter Hersey, and Anthony Colella secured a school-record time of 8:28.15. Simon Brown placed second in the 2-mile (9:49.06).

Lynnfield’s Eli Mendese delivered a strong Division 5 meet as his Pioneer boys (21 points) placed 12th. Mendese finished second in the pentathlon (school-record 2,889 points), sixth in javelin (142-11), and seventh in high jump (6-0). Nick Kelter placed second in the triple jump (45-3), which also broke a school record.

In Division 4 action, Saugus’ Peyton DiBiasio – also a star basketball player and all-time leading scorer in Saugus girls’ history – was named state champion in javelin.
