Lynn bites back against food insecurity

LYNN — The Phoenix Food Hub (PFH) and Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS), through Mass General Brigham, are inviting community organizations to apply for funding that supports nutrition initiatives and the reduction of food insecurity in the City.

“Through generous funding from Mass General Brigham, the Phoenix Food Hub has committed to providing about $125,000 per year between FY2024-2027 to local agencies working to address food insecurity in Lynn,” said Valerie Parker Callahan, Senior Director of Population Health. “The Phoenix Food Hub, managed by Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) and physically located at the GLSS facility in downtown Lynn, is a collaboration of multiple local agencies and the City of Lynn who are actively partnering to address the critical issue of food insecurity in the area.

Although this is a relatively small grant program, we think it has a mighty impact. The Phoenix Food Hub Community Grants program enables multiple local organizations — often the very organizations who are right at the front lines of this issue — to close important funding gaps and leverage needed resources for the kinds of innovations and grassroots supports that are most effective in meeting the growing food security needs of residents. The Community Grants Program is one of the ways in which the Phoenix Food Hub is working to promote meaningful resource sharing across the city’s varied food security providers in the spirit of a true Hub model in which the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.  In the current context of shrinking funding for vital resources, programs like this Community Grant initiative become more important than ever.”

The funding will support initiatives that meet a specific and demonstrated need, serve populations that are typically harder to reach, and strengthen collaboration across the Phoenix Food Hub network.

Proposals are requested from organizations to provide services to Lynn residents of all ages for the Community Grant Program, according to a press release from PFH.

There is no funding available for individuals, though people like chefs can partner with a 501(c)(3) organization to request support. Also, community entities that are not organized non-profits can partner with a 501(c)(3) agency to deliver programming. The Lynn Food Police Council can help identify and promote these collaborations and partnerships, the release said.

PFH is planning to disburse around $125,000 for the program this year. There are no specific restrictions for the amount of applicant funding requests.

PFH and GLSS hope to support as many projects as they can, and are interested in learning about different ideas and visions. Partial funding, as appropriate, may be awarded in support of larger efforts. The groups are also interested in supporting smaller scale efforts that meet identified needs. However, they prefer that the minimal funding request be $2,500.

For more details you can visit the PFH For Providers section of its website. Any questions can be directed to Lema Sharifi, community grants administrator, by email: [email protected].

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2025.
