HINGHAM — Lynnfield’s boys tennis team headed down to Hingham High Thursday evening, but for Coach Joe Dunn and his Pioneers, it was well worth the trip.
No. 2 Lynnfield defeated No. 6 Sturgis Charter West, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Division 4 state tournament. The Pioneers take on top-ranked Manchester-Essex in Saturday’s state championship match on MIT’s DuPont Tennis Courts beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Shea McCarthy (6-4, 6-1) and Matt Reinold (6-3, 6-3) won at first and third singles, respectively, but Shlok Kudrimoti fell just short in his second-singles showdown.
The Pioneers had more than enough in the tank.
Raffi Arkun and Andee Shieh won at first doubles (6-2, 6-2), followed by a second doubles triumph from Rishabh Anand and Rowan Bayer (6-4, 6-3).
It’s been quite the tournament run for Lynnfield (17-3), which has also taken down No. 31 Springfield International Charter School (5-0 final), No. 18 Nantucket (5-0 final), and No. 7 Mystic Valley Charter (4-1 final).
Talk about an opportunity for sweet revenge. The Pioneers reached the title match last spring, but lost to Manchester-Essex in a 3-2 battle.
