NAHANT — The School Committee voted to renew Superintendent of Schools Rob Liebow’s contract for a three-year period, after an evaluation yielded positive results in his efforts to lead Johnson Elementary School and provide its students with a proper education.
During the meeting, Committee Chair Patty Karras began by reading comments from Liebow’s evaluation, where she called it “exemplary.
“He demonstrated high levels of leadership and developed strong relationships with the teachers, students, and faculty,” Karras said. “Mr. Liebow sent out a survey to the staff to address the current needs, future needs, and areas of concern that the teachers and staff may currently have — and has worked on addressing all of these areas.”
Karras continued, “Mr. Liebow is a true-to-the-core educator. He listens to everybody and jumps in where people need to see him as a human being having fun. The visits to every class, the van driving, and volunteering his time during the town’s Halloween ‘Boo-bash’ to engage with families and the community. … It allowed families who had not met him yet to do so, and this was greatly impactful, in a positive way, within the community.”
She continued, saying that the partnership with Swampscott Middle School “is absolutely fantastic.
“His attitude about it, and our need to align with them in so many ways: social-emotional, as well as academic, is so refreshing,” Karras said. “His attitude alone will move this community forward. I feel so grateful for having him here.”
After Karras thanked Liebow for all his contributions to Johnson Elementary School, the School Committee offered Liebow a three-year contract as a .40 FTE (which is 40% of a full-time employment position) Superintendent of the Nahant Public Schools, with an annual salary of $70,000. Before it could be made official, the committee had to vote on the matter.
The committee then went through a roll-call vote, and decided unanimously in support of renewing Liebow’s contract.
“I’m proud that the town has trust and faith in me, and I look forward to working with them, especially their kids, which is their most precious resource,” Liebow said. “And I look forward to giving them every opportunity they have to learn and grow more. … I appreciate the trust and faith in me, and will do the best job I can for them.”
Liebow noted that while it was a transition year with the search for a new principal, along with the rise of Special Education costs, his commitment to the students kept him grounded. “We had to adjust the budget accordingly, and the town is wonderful to work with. I just think the School Committee should be proud of their work.”
