The city of Lynn released a statement updating the community on the UV pilot program at King’s Beach after the system was previously clogged by high concentrations of seaweed.
The statement noted that on June 19, Dandreo Brothers General Contractors installed new reinforced and removable screens in the culverts. “These screens are designed to prevent seaweed from re-entering the culverts and interfering with the pumps and UV system. Additionally, before installation, Dandreo will clear any existing seaweed and debris from the culverts,” the statement said.
Daily monitoring and maintenance will be performed for these screens to remove accumulated seaweed and debris. The city also stated it would restart the pumps and UV system by June 20.
Save King’s Beach founder Andrea Amour shared her perspective on the matter.
“We all knew this pilot was a bit of an experiment and that things likely would need troubleshooting. It’s just bad luck that the problem happened on day one, and I am very happy to hear that positive progress is being made to solve the issues and get the system back online,” Armour said.
She continued, “Hopefully, there are no more hiccups. Thanks to everyone involved for their collaboration to get things up and running again so we can continue learning about this technology; hopefully get the water from Stacey’s Brook cleaned up for the rest of the summer.”
