SAUGUS — Breakheart Reservation got an upgrade Saturday thanks to Liam Martin, who rebuilt a fire pit at the reservation as a part of his Eagle Scout project.
“There used to be a fire pit over here. It was pretty worn and broken and kind of unsafe. So, my project is fixing it. The first part of it, I ripped out the existing base that was all rotted out and broken, and now we’re putting in a new one. And we’re building a new fire pit on top of it. It’s going to look nice, and it’s going to be safer. We’re also going to lay some grass seeds around it and just make the whole area look better,” Martin said.
Before the renovation, the fire pit was deemed unsafe, which is why Martin chose it as his project. Not only would it create a safe environment, but it would also make a nice spot for people to sit during Breakheart’s various events.
Family members, volunteers, State Rep. Donald Wong, members of the Department of Conservation and Recreation and Friends of Breakheart Reservation all either helped out in the build or watched on as the scout was hard at work.
Father Rob Martin said that his son has been enjoying the project and has also been a part of scouts since he was in first grade. “Liam is in charge of the whole thing. It was originally going to be round, but then we went to a square design,” he said.
He then pointed out what the crew was currently up to. “Right now, they’re putting that wood around it. There will be metal edging that sits where that piece of wood is now, and the wood will be gone by the end. It was to figure out exactly where the middle edging was going to go,” he said.
Martin also mentioned that Friends of Breakheart Reservation donated the supplies for the fire pit. “Northeast nursery also did some donations for us,” he said.
As time passed, the pit slowly came to life as each person played their part in getting it set up, all guided by Martin’s plans.
After hours of preparation on Martin’s end and hard work from the crew, a brand new fire pit was created.
With the Eagle Scout project done, Martin now has to fill out paperwork, including an Eagle Scout Rank Application, and participate in an Eagle Board of Review to earn his new rank as an Eagle Scout.
