NAHANT — Town Administrator Tony Barletta, various department heads, and the Select Board were joined by State Sen. Brendan Crighton, State Rep. Sean Reid and former State Rep. Peter Capano, who helped secure funding for a new cemetery vehicle.
Thanks to the help of a legislative earmark budget for $50,000, the town was able to purchase a state-of-the-art Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) to help operations at Greenlawn Cemetery on High Street. The new UTV comes with all-terrain tires, a protective cab that offers air conditioning in the summer and a heater for winter, as well as a bed that can lift to dump dirt or other debris.
According to Barletta, the UTV can also be used for other purposes around town.
“We could use it to get down to the beach, put somebody in the back if we needed to… Though it will be primarily for Greenlawn Cemetery,” Barletta said.
Barletta explained that the equipment upgrade was essential. The cemetery had a similar vehicle for operational purposes — though the vehicle was nearly a decade old, had no protective cab for the user, and over time had succumbed to wear and tear.
“I applaud the town officials for keeping us informed, because we don’t always know what’s going on at the ground level and what the needs might be, necessarily… It’s great to help out in the small ways that we can,” State Senator Brendan Crighton said.
Reid also shared his thoughts on the new upgrade for the cemetery and the town.
“My thanks go to Senator Crighton and former Rep. Pete Capano, as well as town officials, for their leadership in getting these important projects done, as well as continuing to fight for projects like these, that put taxpayer money to good use for everyone,” Reid said.
