The Wyoma 10s baseball team advanced to the District 16 championship game Friday evening with a 2-0 win over Lynnfield.
Wyoma jumped out to an early lead, scoring both of its runs in the first inning — enough to hold off Lynnfield the rest of the way.
Marco Owumi led off the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a groundout by Andrew Newhall. Nolan Duvert followed with an RBI double to right-center field, scoring Owumi for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Wyoma executed a double steal, with Duvert swiping home to make it 2-0.
On the mound, Justin Young pitched 4 2/3 innings to earn his second win of the tournament. He allowed just three hits and struck out five. Owumi earned the save, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Lynnfield threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but Owumi escaped the jam with a clutch strikeout to end the inning.
Manager Jeff Newhall credited Wyoma’s defense, which committed no errors and recorded 11 putouts.
“The kids are playing great, and for a team of 10-year-olds to play that well in the field is very rare and impressive,” Newhall said. “Justin was tremendous once again, and Marco closed the door once again.”
Wyoma will face Saugus in the final on Monday. Game time is to be determined.
