For many, Sundays are for rest and recovery. But for the 12-year-old Wyoma and Swampscott All-Star squads, there was no time for rest in a nail-biter won by Wyoma, 1-0, against the two-time defending champions.
Wyoma’s Anthony Owumi delivered in the District 16 showdown, going the distance and allowing just one hit. He struck out six batters – none more important than when he ended the game with a punchout while Swampscott had a player on third base.
The game’s lone run belonged to Jacob Schipilliti in the third inning. He reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a two-out single to center field from Dylan Martel.
At one point, Swampscott had runners on first and second base with no outs, but Wyoma turned a 3-6-5 triple play to escape the trouble.
Wyoma takes on Peabody in the winners’ bracket Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. Swampscott battles Saugus Monday at 5:45 p.m.
West Lynn (12s) 11
East Lynn (12s) 1
Saturday afternoon in Swampscott, East and West Lynn squared off in the District 16 All-Star tournament. West Lynn took care of business, 11-1, behind Rudy Mendez’s two home runs and five RBI. Pitcher Ben Naugle shut down East Lynn’s bats with seven strikeouts and no runs allowed across 3 2/3 innings. East Lynn has lost two games, while West Lynn returns to action against Peabody West Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.
Peabody West (11s) 8
Saugus (11s) 4
In an elimination game of the District 16 All-Star tournament, Peabody West took down Saugus, 8-4, Saturday afternoon at MacArthur Park in Peabody.
West’s Will Sabia earned the win after five strong innings. Once Sabia reached his pitching limit, Brayden Coburn entered in relief and registered the final six outs.
The game’s first runs belonged to West.
“They were patient at the plate and able to load the bases . . . scoring two runs,” said West Manager Shaun Coburn.
West added to its lead in the fourth inning when leadoff hitter Brayden Coburn doubled and Jaxson Vallatini singled. From there, Sabia knocked them in with a double.
“The boys played good baseball today. They knew what was at stake with this being an elimination game. They showed up and played good fundamental baseball,” Shane Coburn said. “We made the plays defensively, got some great pitching, and some timely hitting. I’m proud of the way they were able to come off a tough loss against Lynnfield, put it in the rearview mirror, and take care of business today.”
