SWAMPSCOTT — The town will be procuring three dumpsters for residents to toss out one trash bag per residence at the Department of Public Works (DPW) yard on July 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We are anticipating trash to pick up on Monday by Republic Services, even though they’re on strike, but because of the holiday and delay from this week, we will open up the yard to accept household trash from residents, one bag only, and residents must provide some form of identification,” Select Board member Danielle Leonard said.
The town has reached out to G/J Towing, which will provide the town with a supplier to provide several dumpsters, according to Leonard.
Leonard asked that all residents pull their trash off the sides of the road and keep any excess trash in their garage, driveway or shed if possible.
Interim Town Administrator and Director of the DPW Gino Cresta explained that the town is making the most out of a difficult situation.
“I’d just like to apologize to all residents for the inconvenience… We’re doing our best to make the best out of a bad situation.”
The town previously announced that Republic Services will resume trash and recycling pick ups on July 7 following the news of Teamsters Local 25 going on strike over contract disputes. The strike has affected communities across the North Shore such as Swampscott, Marblehead, Lynnfield, and Peabody.
The town also released a list of requests for residents.
- If your trash is placed out on the curb already, please take it back onto your property until your next collection day.
- Do your best to utilize any extra barrels you may have to store the extra trash bags, or store in a garage or shed, if possible, to reduce the attraction of wildlife and rodents.
- Place your waste out for collection as late as possible before your collection day, but before 7 a.m. on collection day.
- For NEXT WEEK ONLY, Tuesday through Friday routes, blue overthrow bags will not be required. The truck will collect two weeks’ worth of regular household trash from each curbside dwelling unit on the route.
- Please refrain from placing bulk items with bulk stickers out this week. Our priority for this week is to collect regular household trash.
- As a temporary option for extra trash, we will allow residents from the Tuesday through Friday routes to drop off up to one large 35-gallon trash bag at the DPW Yard, located at 200 Paradise Road, on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please have your ID ready. This is for Swampscott residents only. Residents can reduce the amount of their trash by using our free food waste compost bins.
- These bins are located around town for residents. Please click on the photo for instructions on what is allowed in the compost bin. The use of brown paper bags or specially labeled compostable bags only.
