SWAMPSCOTT — The town is seeking a grant from the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for $100,000 to fund the replacement of the safety surfacing at Abbott Playground.
With the general condition of the surface having become cracked and ripped open after years of wear and tear, the project seeks to increase accessibility for kids and adults with mobility issues while also increasing safety by replacing the surface, in order to help revamp the area.
Interim Town Administrator and Director of the Department of Public Works Gino Cresta explained the background of the project and the important role it plays in public safety.
“Several years ago, we put down a rubber surface, which has become broken up over the years,” Cresta explained. “So the town is looking to replace it. … Plus, if somebody were to fall, it wouldn’t be like they’re falling on asphalt, and the rubber will help absorb some of the shock if someone falls. It’s really an improvement.”
The total cost estimate for the project is currently $205,810, according to Community and Economic Development Director Marzie Galazka. It should be noted that the project is still in its early stages as the town is taking the first steps to secure the grant.
Cresta explained that once the project is completely underway, it shouldn’t take longer than a week to finish as long as no unexpected challenges or hurdles are encountered.
“The Town of Swampscott recognizes the importance of providing safe and accessible community spaces, particularly in Environmental Justice (EJ) populations. This project will benefit local residents who may face barriers to accessing recreational opportunities,” the town said in an online statement.
The town is also encouraging community members to share their thoughts and feedback on the project. If any residents have questions or would like more information, they can contact the Office of Community and Economic Development at 781-596-8829, Ext. 1251.
