NAHANT — The town is eagerly working to recruit a new alternate member to get involved with the operations of the Planning Board.
While an alternate member is not allowed to vote on Planning Board issues, alternates are still allowed to join all meetings, join in discussion, ask questions and make comments, and conduct the necessary research, according to Chair Sheila Hambleton. The board is typically responsible for creating comprehensive guides to scope out the town’s future, developing zoning bylaws, and regulations for land subdivision.
Hambleton spoke with The Item on Tuesday morning and elaborated further on the board seeking out its new alternate member.
“They don’t have voting rights, but they’re allowed to attend meetings, and they’re actually a huge asset,” Hambleton said. “They tend to do a lot more research, and really do some hands-on work with the rest of the members.”
She added new alternates “get educated very quickly” once they’re appointed.
“Generally speaking, we have a process that any alternate who’s been on the board, when there’s a real board vacancy, usually they get promoted to fill that vacancy, where they’re able to participate with voting rights,” Hambleton explained.
After letters of interest have been received, both the Board of Selectmen and the Planning Board will have a joint public meeting to take a joint vote to fill the position.
All letters of interest for the position should be sent to [email protected] by July 23.
