LYNN — Ashley Aldred has been named athletic director of Lynn English High School, replacing Dick Newton, who held the role since 2016 before retiring in June.
Aldred, English’s varsity softball coach since 2019, becomes the City of Lynn’s first female athletic director.
“I am truly honored and excited to step into the role of athletic director at Lynn English High School,” said Aldred, an Arlington native who played college softball at Salem State. “I want to thank (Principal) Dr. (Rardy) Peña and the hiring committee for placing their trust in me to lead the athletic department. I look forward to working collaboratively with our student-athletes, coaches, administration, and the entire Lynn English community.”
Peña said Aldred “was the most qualified candidate based on her education and experience.
“She understands the importance of increasing participation in sports among all our students and offered strong actionable strategies by which to do so,” Peña said. “She recognizes the significance of the interrelationship between academics and athletics, and is committed to ensuring the members of our Bulldogs teams are successful student-athletes. Ashley brings energy, enthusiasm and an unwavering commitment to our Lynn English family. She leads by example as an educator and mentor to our student-athletes and we look forward to seeing her lead our athletic department.”
Aldred was The Item’s Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading the Bulldogs to their first postseason appearance since 1999. English began that spring 4-9, but wrapped up the regular season with six wins to clinch.
Aldred also coached last fall’s English-Classical powderpuff game.
