LYNN — Two dogs and one man were saved by Mia Bontos as a second alarm fire quickly progressed from their front porch to the second floor of their home.
Winston Darlington said he was about to take a shower when the fire first broke out.
Bontos acted swiftly and, because of her quick thinking, rescued her grandfather, Darlington, and their two dogs before the Lynn fire department arrived.
Around 10:24 a.m. Thursday morning, firefighters responded to a fire at 54 Hacker Rd. Upon arrival, crews reported smoke and flames coming from the roof of the single-family home, Lynn Fire Dept. District Chief Michael McBride said.
McBride said it took crews approximately 45 minutes to battle the flames.
Only one minor injury was reported, McBride said. A firefighter reported a minor back strain from lugging the heavy equipment.
Lauren Dellascio, a neighbor, said, “This is just so sad. They are a very nice family.”
She added, “I am just so happy that their two dogs got out — their dogs are so important to them.”
Connor McCarthy of Baystate Board Up, an emergency services company, said he witnessed the fire crawl from the front porch to the second floor and then back to the first floor. He said it only took 15 minuets for the Lynn fire department to change the category from a first alarm fire to a second alarm fire, in order to get more firefighters on scene.
The Revere fire department was also on scene at the time of the fire.
