Youth track series running it back at Manning Field

LYNN — The 11th Annual Youth Summer Track Meet Series, held at Manning Field, has returned with two weeks in the books.

The first meet welcomed 106 athletes. The second welcomed an additional 34, bringing the summer’s total to 140.

Lynn’s Lincoln Xaltidia dominated the toddlers’ division (3 and under), placing first in the 30m, 50m, 100m and 200m with times of 6.7, 15.9, 30.3, and 64.9, respectively.

“Youngsters may compete in as many running events as they desire,” said organizer Joe Abelon. “There are long jump and softball events that are constantly being used – jump and throw all night long.”

Lynn’s Awan Awan, 17, won two events with quality times in the 50m (6.5) and 200m (22.2).

The event welcomed – for the 10th consecutive year – former Lynn and current Marblehead resident Roxanna Duchane, who was 7 months old when she first competed.

The toddlers’ division brought more excitement in the second meet, with 2-year-old Romeo Dias (Winthrop; 10.0) besting 3-year-old Asa Sklarsky (Melrose; 10.2) by 0.2 seconds.

Lynn’s Alyenys Velez continued his winning ways in the 50m (6.5) and 100m (12.3).

Nine-year-old Fatimah Gibson (Hyde Park), daughter of former Lynn Classical indoor hurdler Karim Gibson – a Division 3 state meet champion – delivered quality performances against runners much older than her. She placed fourth in the 50m, 8th in the 100m, and 4th in the 200m.

The third meet is scheduled for Monday at Manning Field.
