NAHANT — The Police Department has announced Officer Heather Leary has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, which makes her the first female appointed to the rank in the department’s history.
Leary was officially sworn in as sergeant on July 23 during a ceremony at Town Hall. Going forward, she will oversee the night shift from midnight to 8 a.m., according to the department’s press release.
She first joined the Nahant Police Department in 2019 as a civilian Police Matron, and was responsible for the care and supervision of female prisoners and detainees. In 2020 she became a reserve officer and later began as the department’s first full-time female officer in 2021.
Police Chief Timothy Furlong shared his excitement for the department reaching the historic milestone.
“I would like to congratulate Sgt. Leary on this well-deserved promotion,” he said. “She has already proven herself to be a leader in the department, and I look forward to watching her continue to grow in this next chapter of her career here in Nahant.”
Furlong continued, “I have full confidence that she’ll have no problem picking up the ball and running with her new duties. … I have no doubt she’ll go far in this department, and I could certainly see her taking over for me in the future. This is a very historic day for Nahant Police.”
Select Board Chair Rob Tibbo said he “couldn’t be prouder.
“I’m very happy with the appointment of Leary to Seargeant, and I’m very proud of all her accomplishments,” Tibbo said.
Select Board member Pat O’Reilly also commented on the development.
“Heather Leary’s promotion to sergeant reflects her outstanding 14 years of law enforcement experience and proven leadership within the Nahant Police Department as recognized by Chief Furlong and the community. Her own dedication and skill make her a great choice for this role. Congratulations again, Sgt. Leary,” O’Reilly said.
Leary said the promotion was “a huge milestone for both myself and the department.
“I’m looking forward to jumping into the role and doing the best I can,” Leary said. “I’m very grateful for this appointment, and I couldn’t think of a better department to serve.”
