LYNN — A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:26 p.m. on July 30 at the area of Cottage Street and Woodman Street.
Police officers responded to the area and found the victim suffering from “serious injuries.” He was then transported to a local hospital in stable condition, according to a statement made to The Daily Item by Lynn Police Department Lt. Richard Connick.
As for the operator of the motor vehicle, they remained on the scene and were given a citation for failure to yield for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
Off-duty paramedic and Lynn resident John Robert Gardner was sleeping when he heard the sound of the collision, and rushed outside to administer medical care to the boy.
Gardner gave 25 News Boston details on how he addressed the victim’s wounds.
“I put a trauma dressing over the area of his forehead where there was an injury. I immediately started determining the level of consciousness,” he said.
Gardner also described the extent of the victim’s injuries from his observation.
“It was an obvious trauma. He had hit the windshield. It was a significant impact. The bike was thrown a ways. I would estimate his body was thrown about 10 feet,” Gardner told CBS News Boston.
Gardner also told CBS News Boston his concerns about the area in which the boy was struck.
“There needs to be more at this crossing — blinking lights, something. We’re constantly hollering at cars going way too fast down here. It was only a matter of time. Based on what I saw, it looks like we got pretty well lucky this time,” Gardner said.
The names of the boy and the operator of the motor vehicle have not been released.
This is currently an ongoing investigation by the Lynn Police Department.
