NAHANT — Johnson Elementary School is at the home-stretch of its mission to create a fully-operational greenhouse for students to grow and sell crops to the community, with construction of the structure now completed.
Superintendent of Schools Rob Liebow spoke with The Daily Item on his excitement for what’s to come, citing his thanks for those who helped during the school’s “Buy a Brick” fundraiser which helped fund the project, though the majority of the project’s funds had already been gifted to the school by an anonymous donor.
“I’m just really proud of everyone who helped make this happen, especially our anonymous donation of $80,000,” Liebow said. “That really went a long way, but (so did) everyone who reached out and bought a brick.”
Liebow added that while the physical structure of the greenhouse is complete, all that’s left is to install the proper electrical work as well as raised beds for soil and seeds. After that, by the time the next school year rolls around, the goal is to have a fully fledged greenhouse and teach the students how to grow and sell crops to others within the surrounding communities, according to Liebow.
He continued, saying the most important part is that the students “will learn to give back to a community that has given to them.”
Liebow said Deerfield Greenhouse was the company to construct the greenhouse.
