LYNN — The third annual backpack and school supplies giveaway and community cookout at the Lynn First Church of Nazarene will take place this Saturday, Aug. 9, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Approximately 100 backpacks have been donated by the First Church of Nazarene, Juneteenth Northshore Association, and local Girl Scouts troops. The local Girl Scouts troops used a portion of the proceeds from their cookie sales to help provide supplies for the event.
Each backpack will contain a notebook, pencil case, pencils, pen, eraser, and colored pencils.
“Backpacks and school supplies can be costly for a lot of families. We wanted to give what is needed at a time when it would be needed,” First Church of Nazarene Pastor Gina Cordy said.
Lynn Councilor at Large and Northshore Juneteenth Association President and Founder Nicole McClain also commented on the significance of the event for the Lynn community.
“Students need to feel a sense of belonging. If everyone else around them has what they need to start the school year, and they don’t, they feel othered,” she said.
“It’s important that we make sure every student comes to school feeling welcomed and that they have everything they need for the school year,” said McClain.
This year, The First Church of Nazarene is also collaborating with non-profit human services organization Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center to collect donations of non-perishable food for a food drive.
To keep the kids occupied, the event will also come with sidewalk chalk, bubbles, an arts and crafts station, and a cookout provided by Lynn resident Steve Thayer. Food manufacturer Old Neighborhood will be donating 2 cases of hot dogs, while members of the Lynn Police Department will also attend.
“We want people to feel comfortable and welcome. The main priority is bringing a sense of belonging and togetherness for the families,” Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center Program Director Olivia Grinstead said of the giveaway’s many happenings.
The event will continue until supplies last.
