LYNN — When comments like “I never knew this beach was here” or “I’m definitely coming back” were heard by Beat the Streets Director of Operations Brett Poirier, he couldn’t have been happier.
The regional wrestling non-profit teamed up with Lynn Mayor Jared C. Nicholson to host the 10th Annual Lynn Shore Showdown between Lynn and Nahant Beach Saturday.
Featuring action-packed beach wrestling across U8, U10, U12, U15, high school, and open divisions – with proceeds supporting local youth wrestling programs and year-round development opportunities through Beat the Streets – 75 competitors rolled around for a good cause.
“I sincerely appreciate everyone who helped make the 10th Lynn Shore Showdown a great success, including Beat the Streets New England, DCR, Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach, and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay,” Nicholson said. “Most important, thanks to all of the participants. … Special congratulations to the Lynn contingent for a strong performance.”
The grappling kicked off at 11 a.m. Nicholson, who wrestled at Princeton University, joined the fun and hit the sand.
“We had a great turnout, competitive wrestling, and lots of fun,” he said.
Pins and takedowns aside, the event presented youth members from Beat the Streets the opportunity to host the event, promote, and run operations such as officiating and scorekeeping.
Poirier said Saturday showed the “power and impact” an event can have on its community.
“I love this tournament. It’s the most fun event of the year and I’m at tournaments all across the nation,” said Poirier, whose non-profit uses wrestling to engage and empower inner-city students. “After 10 years, Mayor Nicholson has created a culture for the community and one that allows many people from across our region to enjoy the shores of Lynn.”
Of the 75 competitors, 20 came from Boston, 15 from Providence, and 10 from Lynn.
Matches followed beach wrestling rules with athletes competing inside of a 23-foot diameter ring. The first wrestlers to three points won.
