Lynn is looking to add more electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city.

Lynn charged up by EV stations

LYNN — The city is seeking to increase the amount of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by partnering with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC).

Lynn is one of 15 state municipalities selected by MassCEC for its On Streets Charing Solutions Program implementation services. These services cover the installation of On-Street Charging EV Service Equipment at up to three sites, with 4-10 Level 2 charging ports per site.

“Expanding access to EV charging stations has been a priority for the City. We commend MassCEC’s work to ensure those in EJ communities have access to sufficient charging options. Their outreach efforts in our community have been important in connecting with residents to understand their vision for their neighborhoods and to make sure these charging stations are placed where they will be most used and most effective,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said.

On Streets Charging Solutions Program Manager Devin DiLibero said Lynn was chosen due to the city’s dense population, its high percentage of residents living in multi-family housing without off-street parking, and its status as an Environmental Justice Population in accordance with the state of Massachusetts.

Lynn currently has five active EV charging stations, and MassCEC is currently gathering input from residents regarding optimal locations for the new stations. There are currently eight location options being considered, however, the survey allows for additional suggestions.

“We really want community feedback. We want these charging stations to serve people who actually want them, and could benefit from using them,” DiLibero said.

“If you build it, they will come. This transition is happening sooner than some people realize. EVs will likely be a prominent vehicle on the road in recent years, so we are looking to build these charging stations before there’s a crazy amount of demand, so when the demand does increase, we can meet it,” she added.
